Enjoying the present or meticulously planning the next day/week/month/year? Let's face it, we like to plan the work and work the plan but what if the plan is not God's plan? Is all the effort, sweat and ambition going to be worth it when the task or job is complete?
Our family recently went to the mountains to spend some quality time together. We traveled to Transylvania County in North Carolina where there are over 250 magnificent cascades within a few miles of each other. One of the waterfalls we saw during our trip was called Whitewater Falls that drops more than 400 feet in a series of cascading falls. The path was paved as we embarked on a 1/2 mile hike to see something magnificent that took our breath away.
Compare that experience to another hike we took in Gorges State Park to see Rainbow Falls. The path was not paved and there were several warning signs about the dangers associated with hiking on this trail. It was a hike that took longer than expected and felt like it was uphill both ways. We encountered several bee hives along the way which cut our hike short to see Rainbow Falls which left us feeling disappointed and unfulfilled.
How is your hike with God going? "When we have the right relationship with God, life is full of spontaneous, joyful uncertainty and expectancy." If we are trying to fill that void deep down inside our soul with anything else, we'll find ourselves anxiously planning the next thing and never find true satisfaction.
"We are uncertain of the next step, but we are certain of God. As soon as we abandon ourselves to God and do the task He has placed closest to us, He begins to fill our lives with surprises." (My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers)
"In moments when you wish you knew what you can't know, there is rest to be found. There is One who knows. He loves you and rules what you don't understand with your good in mind." (New Morning Mercies: A Daily Gospel Presentation by Paul David Tripp)
